Stringent safety requirements for shaft hoisting systems

Winders are machines requiring a high degree of safety and reliability that convey loads and travel long distances at high speeds. Not only do they convey material and raw materials but, depending on the shaft system, also large numbers of people. To be able to guarantee safe and reliable operation, appropriate safety equipment must be incorporated. Disk brake equipment by SIEMAG TECBERG is an integrated and important component of winders and guarantees secure braking both for safety braking under normal operating conditions and in emergency situations.

Individually tailored solutions

Every braking system is individually designed for a particular shaft system, in compliance with the applying standards and regulations. The braking system essentially consists of brake posts, own-developed brake units, hydraulic units and electro-hydraulic brake control systems.

Brake posts and brake units

The brake posts, which are adapted to fit the respective winder, are fitted with proprietary-developed type BE brake units (see table) approved as component parts in compliance with the German Mining Regulations for Shaft Hoisting and Inclined Conveyor Systems (Bergverordnung für Schacht- und Schrägförderanlagen, BVOS). The brake units transmit the braking force to the brake disk(s) of the rope carrier. The braking force is applied under constant control to protect the hoisting equipment and, on KOEPE hoisting systems, to prevent rope slippage. Braking force is generated by means of pretensioned springs and opened hydraulically, so that in the event of an interruption or breakdown the system can also be brought to a halt without the use of electrical power. Both, wear on the brake linings and spring breakage are monitored and indicated.

Oil pressure generation, control block, valve fittings and the reservoir for adjustable pressure are compactly arranged in the hydraulic unit. The pipework to the brake posts is made from thick-walled pipes with a large cross-section.


SIEMAG TECBERG GmbH’s electro-hydraulic brake systems are a component of the disk brake equipment on hoists and fulfil a number of functions there:

  • Holding brake: When the winder is at a standstill, the system is depressurised and the brake actuators apply full braking force to the disk brake
  • Drive brake: During normal hoisting operation manual braking force control is possible by means of a hand lever on the control desk
  • Safety brake: The safety brake is activated when triggered by emergency-off or through a fault in the hoisting operation

Activation of braking force for safety braking to a great extent determines the type and design of an electro-hydraulic brake control system:

  • Constant braking force for simple applications and at a hoisting speed of maximum 4 m/s
  • Constant braking force at a hoisting speed of more than 4 m/s
  • Constant retardation at a hoisting speed of more than 4 m/s

The electronically regulated electro-hydraulic brake control system is a closed system, which is independent from other control systems, used on the hoisting system. It is housed fully wired in dust-tight switch cabinets. Control and monitoring of the system are done by means of redundant PLC technology. The clearly defined interfaces to the winding machine control system are fitted with plug contacts.


The complete disk brake system, including pipework, is constructed at our workshop and is function-tested and pre-set before despatch. Therefore assembly, installation and commissioning are trouble-free, and reliable operation is guaranteed by SIEMAG TECBERG braking systems.
