Operator Know-how

The construction of the 57 km long railway tunnel, the worlds longest, through the Swiss Gotthard Massif is being pushed ahead with from both ends and at three access tunnels. At the Sedrun access tunnel a gallery runs into the mountain, from which a blind shaft was then sunk to the tunnel proper.

This shaft has a diameter of 7.9 m and a depth of 821 m. During the construction phase of the tunnel the shaft serves for the entire material transport and men-riding.

SIEMAG TECBERG is operating the fully automatic shaft hoisting system for transporting the rock, the building material and the personnel during the entire construction phase of the new Gotthard base tunnel. Besides the main hoisting equipment, the system includes an auxiliary hoisting system, the equipment for handling the ropes and a mobile rescue winch.

The hoist can transport 6,350 t of waste a day, plus 50 material units daily and 60 persons per shift and direction of travel. This capacity requires a 4-rope Koepe shaft hoisting machine with a three-phase motor as direct drive, which at an output of 4200 kW powers a rope-guided, two-level cage with 50.8 t payload and counterweight.

A further single-drum shaft hoisting system with an auxiliary cage for 1.6 t payload serves as a secondary man-riding hoist and for evacuation in emergencies.
